On February 28, 2012 Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the International Organizations in Vienna Mr. Ihor Prokopchuk had a meeting with IAEA Director General Mr. Yukia Amano. Current bilateral cooperation issues were discussed at the meeting including integrated safeguards approach for Ukraine, preparation to the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit, improvement of existing international instruments on nuclear safety and nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness.
Yukia Amano welcomed the decision of Ukraine pronounced at the 2010 Washington Nuclear Security Summit to repatriate highly enriched nuclear materials from Ukraine as a practical contribution to enhancement of international non-proliferation regime and nuclear security. The Agency contributed to implementation by Ukraine of its decision through existing safeguards mechanisms. The Director General spoke in favour of introduction of integrated safeguards approach for Ukraine taking into account the achieved level of cooperation between the Agency and Ukraine.
Ihor Prokopchuk assured the Director General of readiness of Ukraine to continue to participate actively in the discussion within the IAEA on improvement of international instruments on nuclear safety and early notification of a nuclear accident.
