On 21 May 2012 Mr.Yury Fedotov, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) began a two-day visit to Ukraine. While in Kyiv, Mr.Fedotov met with Mr.V.Lytvyn, Speaker of the Parliament of Ukraine, Mr. R.Demchenko, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affaires, Mr.V.Tymoshenko, Head of the State Service of Ukraine on Drugs Control and other Ukrainian officials.
During the meetings the sides expressed satisfaction with the positive dynamic of development of bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and UNODC. Mr.Fedotov thanked the Government of Ukraine for supporting the activities of UNODC in countering transnational organized crime and illicit drugs trafficking and highly estimated the active role of Ukraine in implementing the provisions of the international conventions in the sphere of fighting corruption, transnational organized crime and terrorism. Further development of Ukraine-UNODC cooperation in such areas as drug control, HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of drug-dependent persons and capacity-building in the sphere of criminal justice were also discussed.
Mr.Fedotov took part in a High-level International Conference hosted jointly by the State Service of Ukraine on Drugs Control (SSDC) and UNODC to discuss the new comprehensive approaches in the national policy of Ukraine to the problem of illicit drugs and treatment of drug-dependent persons. The draft of New Anti-Drug Strategy of Ukraine till 2020 was in the focus of deliberations. The Executive Director pledged UNODC’s support to the Government of Ukraine in implementing the strategy and further strengthening the counter-narcotic capacity of the country.
