Second Extraordinary Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety took place on 27-31 August 2012 in Vienna. Almost 70 Contracting Parties to the Convention participated in the meeting. In the center of deliberations were the lessons learned from the Fukushima Daici NPP nuclear accident in the context of the Convention, actions taken by the Contracting Parties to enhance safety of nuclear installations and mechanisms for improvement of the Convention review process. The delegation of Ukraine consisting of experts from the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate, State Agency for Exclusion Zone Management, the Ministry for Energy and Coal Industry, national operator NNEGC “Energoatom”, specialists from Ukrainian NPPs and nuclear safety institutions presented a national report of Ukraine on the post Fukushima actions taken to enhance nuclear safety. Ukrainian specialists participated in deliberations on technical and institutional improvements necessary to strengthen nuclear safety sphere and regulatory process. The Extraordinary Meeting adopted a summary report in which the delegations have identified actions to be taken on national and international levels to further improve the implementation of the Convention and enhance nuclear safety regime worldwide.
