The MFA of Ukraine expresses its resolute protest in connection with non-agreed visit of President of the Russian Federation V.Putin to the temporarily occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea and opening of the railway part of the so-called “Crimean bridge” via the Kerch Strait, which the Russian side had built without consent of Ukraine and in blatant violation of the norms of international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea
Neither the visits of Russian officials to Crimea, nor the construction of the bridge, just like any other actions of the occupation administration, can in no way alter the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol enshrined in the Constitution of Ukraine as an integral part of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
Russia’s actions related to the so-called “Crimean bridge” grossly violate the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, bilateral treaty obligations to Ukraine, and fundamentally contradict the universally accepted norms and principles of international law.
Neither Ukraine, nor any civilized state of the world recognizes the Kremlin’s void attempts to legitimize annexation of part of Ukraine’s sovereign territory.
We reiterate that the Russian Federation as an occupying Power bears full responsibility for the consequences of its internationally wrongful acts.
We demand that the Russian side cease illegal acts and any activity in the territories of Ukraine temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation – the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.
The protest Note on the matter has been sent to the Russian side.
