On 21-25 May 2012 the 59th Session of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) took place in Vienna. For the first time Ukraine participated in the work of the UNSCEAR as the full-fledged member of this scientific body. The delegation of Ukraine was headed by Director General of the State Institution “National Research Centre for Radiation Medicine” of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine Mr. Dymytrii Bazyka.
At the session the UNSCEAR members discussed the issues of ability to attribute risks and effects to radiation exposure, methodology for estimating human exposures due to radioactive discharges, radiation exposures from electricity generation, biological effects of selected internal emitters, effects of radiation exposure on children, uncertainties in risk estimates for cancer due to exposure to ionizing radiation, mechanisms of radiation actions at low doses as well as the issues of radiation exposure due to the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daici NPP in Japan. The delegations deliberated the relevant recommendations and started preparation of a report to the next session of the UN General Assembly on the current work of the UNSCEAR.
