Address by Ambassador Ihor Prokopchuk at the Opening of the Ukrainian Week in the UNOV
Excellencies, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen!
It's my pleasure to welcome you at the opening of The Ukrainian Week at the Vienna International Centre. I wish all plenty of memorable moments and the best impressions!
As this is the first time that such a formidable event dedicated to Ukraine takes place in the UN premises, I wish at the very beginning to express my words of appreciation.
I will start by thanking the United Nations Office in Vienna for making today’s event possible. And of course, I am very happy to state that this occasion would never happen without tireless efforts of the members of the VIC Ukrainian Club.
The Ukrainian Club was established a little more than a year ago. Since then, it has become an effective platform for communication in real-time about modern Ukraine.
What makes it unique is the fact that it is the only Ukrainian Club in the whole UN system. And it is very symbolic that it works here in the premise of the United Nations Office in Vienna, where various cultures, nations and people meet and intensively interact.
One of the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter is “equal rights of men and women”. With a consistent support of the UN, Ukraine promotes gender equality as a driver of its sustainable development.
Gender equality and women’s empowerment are also a core part of Ukrainian foreign policy, cultural diplomacy and development cooperation.
Over the recent years, Ukrainian women became critical agents of change, significantly contributing to robust economic and cultural development and transformation of Ukraine. They also make an indispensable contribution in the defence of our country against external aggression.
During this week, we will present to you the richness and diversity of the modern Ukrainian culture through the prism of women’s leadership.
We will advocate for an active role of women in communities by showing you the contribution of the Ukrainian women to cultural, economic and social development.
You will have a good opportunity to taste Ukrainian cuisine, listen to classic and modern Ukrainian music, get acquainted with the fashion and art from Ukraine.
The launch of the Ukrainian Week is today’s interactive panel session entitled Accelerating Sustainable Development Through Women’s Empowerment And Leadership.
Notably, it was intended not as merely a general discussion on an important topic, but a call to action to motivate more women into taking bold steps towards their goals and aims.
In a few minutes, we will be shared with several positive stories of success and stories of changes. I hope that they will be motivating for others to follow with full belief in their aspirations.
I can state with certainty that what we are doing today is indeed extremely significant. And your presence is the most tangible recognition of this fact.
Dear guests, please join me in giving a warm welcome to our speakers!
